Terry Hutchens has been covering Indiana University football and basketball since the 1997-98 season. He is currently the IU beat writer for CNHI newspaper group that owns 13 papers in Indiana including dailies in Anderson, Terre Haute, Kokomo, Logansport, Lebanon, Goshen, Jeffersonville/New Albany, Greensburg and Washington. The bulk of Terry’s time covering IU was with the Indianapolis Star from 1997-2013. He also spent two seasons with Scout.com and one freelancing for the Associated Press. While at the Indianapolis Star, Terry was honored as Indiana’s Sportswriter of the Year five times.
Terry has written 13 books including his two new titles out this fall. When I Grow Up I Want To Play For Indiana is his second children's book. His third, and first Purdue-related venture, is When I Grow Up I Want To Play for Purdue. His first children's book, titled Hoo-Hoo-Hoo Hoosiers!, was published in 2016. This is the fourth year in a row that Terry has self-published two titles in the same year. Last year, he wrote Following The General as well as the Indiana Hoosiers' Bucket List, which he co-wrote with Bill Murphy. Other titles by Terry include a pair of IU trivia books, So You Think You Know Indiana University Basketball and the same title for football. He also wrote Missing Banners, Hoosiers Through and Through, Rising From The Ashes: The Return of Indiana University Basketball, Never Ever Quit, Hep Remembered in 2007 and Let 'Er Rip.
He also wrote the latest 13 chapters of the update to the Indiana University Basketball Encyclopedia, originally penned by Jason Hiner. Terry and his wife Susan live in Fishers and have two grown sons, Bryan and Kevin. Bryan works for Eli Lilly and Company in Indy and is currently in grad school working on his MBA at Duke. Kevin is a successful keyboard player in Nashville, Tenn.
